The condition has severely left a toll on both her normal life and professional work. Like the thousands of people affected by the condition, she too reports problems like fatigue, weight gain, pale face, feeling cold, joint and muscle pain,  dry and thinning hair. If left untreated, the condition can further cause depression, panic disorders, a slowed heart rate, and pregnancy complications.

“I had a great time in my twenties. Then your doctor says you’re losing calcium in your bones,” she said. “What the f—k is that?! I would hear those conversations with my mom and grandma, thinking I’d never get there … But all of a sudden it hits you. I s–t you not, it’s from night to day.”

The actress’s mother and sister also suffer from the same disease.

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States. It mostly affects middle-aged women, but it can also affect men and women of all ages, as well as children.

Despite the numerous complications brought on by the disease, Saldana is always on the move and refuses to be defeated by the condition. A true inspiration to the millions afflicted by it, the star is currently working on a biographical movie centered on musician and civil rights activist Nina Simone.
